Abstract

A reconstruction of the neoliberal social theory is proposed from the critique of Hayek and Friedman to the economic planning. The importance of this critique is shown within the neoliberal thought taking into account four aspects: conception of freedom, market, democracy, and the role of the State. In all of them, the central concern of neoliberalism is to propitiate greater individual economic freedom and to minimize State insertion in the market’s free game. Economic planning, and in general, any form of redistribution of social planning or social inequality balancing is considered to be arbitrary, ineffective and restrictive in terms of freedom. The article gives at the end some critical observations, specially in relation to the neoliberal emphasis in market and its radical economicism.
