Abstract

This work deals with the various proposals put forward by the Antofagasta industrial and commercial organizations, as well as the initiatives originating in the public sector, both the City Hall and para-governmental institutions. These proposals were directed to lessen the great depression affecting the province at that time, which was due to the world‘s stock market crisis and the crisis that affected the nitrate industry, both of which coincided between 1929 and 1930, and whose consequences had an effect on the social and economic situation of the city. The ideas to save agricultural activity in the city and its hinterland together with those concerning an embryonic industrialization process before the setting- up of CORFO are remarkable
