Abstract

This paper explores the identity meanings associated with the promising dances of Morenos performed during the festival at the sanctuary of La Tirana, province of Tamarugal, Tarapacá Region, Chile. Assuming a perspective that accentuates the singularities, we describe these religious dances with the objective of giving an account of the diversity of this type of dances, and how they shape today the identities of Afro, Pampino and Chilean. We also try to show that these not only express the collective identities, but also configure them through their own performance. Through review of photographic, audiovisual and bibliographic material, as well as conversations and direct observation of Bailes Morenos in La Tirana 2016 and 2017, we propose to study the festival and the Morenos as a significant and relevant cultural phenomenon of the Norte Grande culture from the past and the present.
