Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze the various road agencies and projects that sought to articulate Tocopilla with Iquique since 1888, considering this road as a means to overcome some local crises. The emphasis is placed on the actions of the Comando Costero Tocopilla al Loa founded in 1968, a group of volunteers that undertook the construction of a coastal highway to Iquique, achieving its objective in 1971. In the same way, the future of the road and the city are analyzed until 1994, period of paving and consolidation of the route to Iquique.
